The Tsunamika project was initiated by the Upasana Design Studio. The Tsunamika dolls are hand made by fisher women of the coastal villages of Tamil Nadu, India whose livelihoods were directly affected by the tsunami on 26th December 2004. The project aims to empower disadvantaged women by giving them the confidence to create and market their own products, and train others. The Tsunamika project is based on the gift economy concept. Tsunamika is given unconditionally to whoever wants her. Tsunamika has no price tag. She is traveling all over the world through a network of volunteers. The Tsunamika project has empowered and enabled these women to rebuild their lives and to become self sufficient once again.
